Desert Backyards That Actually Live
How to design an outdoor space that thrives in arid climates with turf, shade, and smart landscaping.
Desert backyards get dismissed as 'just rocks and cacti.' But with the right approach, they become some of the most livable outdoor spaces — year-round usability, low maintenance, and a beauty that only improves with time.
The Challenge
The backyard was a blank slate of dirt and concrete. The homeowners wanted a space for entertaining, a putting green for weekends, and shade structures that didn't look like afterthoughts. Water usage had to stay minimal.
The Choices We Made
We designed an arched wooden cabana as the focal point — it provides shade and creates a 'room' within the yard. Artificial turf with a putting green gives the space activity without water waste. Bamboo fencing adds privacy and warmth, and strategic palm placement creates natural shade patterns that shift throughout the day.
The homeowners use this backyard more than any room in the house. The putting green gets daily use, the cabana hosts weekend gatherings, and the water bill didn't change. Desert design done right.
